Overview
Supporting the evolution of a large-scale enterprise design system by helping establish structures that enable consistency, collaboration, and long-term scalability across teams.
The Challenge
As digital ecosystems grow, maintaining consistency becomes increasingly complex.
Teams need to balance local needs with shared standards, while ensuring that design systems remain scalable, maintainable, and relevant over time.
The challenge was not only about components and documentation. It was about creating the conditions that allow multiple teams to work towards a shared experience vision.
My Role
I contributed to the evolution of the design system from a DesignOps and Experience Architecture perspective.
My focus areas included:
- governance and decision-making structures
- cross-functional alignment
- stakeholder facilitation
- design system operating models
- scalable ways of working
Working closely with design, engineering, and business stakeholders helped ensure that system-level decisions reflected both user needs and organizational realities.
My Approach
Rather than treating the design system as a collection of UI components, I approached it as an organizational capability.
Key areas of focus included:
Creating Alignment
Facilitating discussions between stakeholders with different goals, priorities, and perspectives.
Establishing Governance
Helping define structures that support clear ownership, efficient decision-making, and sustainable system evolution.
Supporting Scalability
Identifying practices that enable teams to contribute to and benefit from shared assets while maintaining consistency.
Outcome
The work helped strengthen collaboration around the design system and supported its evolution as a shared capability rather than a standalone design asset.
More importantly, it reinforced an idea that continues to shape my work today:
Design systems are not primarily about components.
They are about enabling people, decisions, and collaboration at scale.
They are about enabling people, decisions, and collaboration at scale.
Key Takeaways
Governance enables creativity rather than restricting it.
Scalability requires shared ownership.
Successful systems rely as much on people and processes as on design and technology.
Alignment is often more important than additional documentation.
